In 2022, local songwriter Levi Maxwell embarked on a significant journey, marking his 18th birthday with a solo kayak trip from Lismore to Ballina. The 100-kilometer paddle gave him a firsthand look at the devastation caused by the recent floods that had ravaged the region. As he navigated through the debris-filled waters at dawn, Maxwell was struck by the images of destruction—washing machines lodged in trees, caravans swept away, and household items scattered throughout the landscape.

But amid the wreckage, Levi found inspiration. Rather than focusing solely on the tragedy, he began reflecting on the resilience and unity of the Northern Rivers community. It was this spirit of coming together, of neighbours helping one another in times of need, that would later become the heart of his song, “Dear Richmond.”

'Dear Richmond' - Winner of the Inaugural BaySounds Songwriting Competition Levi MaxwellThe song personifies the Richmond and Wilson Rivers, drawing on their collective wisdom to remind us of the strength that can emerge in the face of adversity. It is a tribute to both the land and the people of the Northern Rivers, highlighting the remarkable way the community united to help those affected by the floods.

Levi describes how the song came together almost effortlessly: “I literally sat at the computer with my guitar, and it just kind of flowed out.” The lyrics pay homage to those who took their boats into the flooded waters to rescue stranded families, provided shelter and food, and helped clean and rebuild homes and businesses. Through “Dear Richmond,” Levi hopes to offer a moment of reflection, especially for those directly impacted by the flood, while expressing gratitude to those who lent a helping hand.

Fast forward two years, and “Dear Richmond” has won the inaugural BaySounds songwriting competition, a collaboration between BayFM Community Radio and SAE Byron, which aims to highlight the best unsigned talent in the Northern Rivers. Levi’s heartfelt tribute now echoes across local airwaves, a testament to the resilience and creativity of the region.

Levi’s victory in BaySounds earned him not only widespread recognition but also the opportunity to record his song professionally produced by Alex L’Estrange. He’s joined by vocal coach Katie Rutledge, whose melodic harmonies add a beautiful depth to the track.

The competition, which saw over 30 entries from local artists, showcased a wide range of genres, from folk to punk, and everything in between. Bay FM President Ange Kent praised the diversity and creativity, noting the depth of talent in the region’s music scene.

For Levi, the journey is just beginning. “I’m so keen to record more songs,” he says, acknowledging that his win has fueled his ambition to continue sharing his music with the world. With a songwriting workshop and filming session as part of his prize, he is focused on getting more of his work out there, building a name for himself as an artist who blends raw emotion with heartfelt storytelling.

“Dear Richmond” stands as a reminder of the power of community, the strength of the human spirit, and the beauty of the Northern Rivers. Through his music, Levi Maxwell captures the essence of a place and a people that, even in the face of tragedy, come together to rebuild and move forward.
